Abstract

The paper presents breakdown characteristics of non-uniform field gaps in SF6 gas under voltages simulating very fast transient overvoltages (VFTO) generated by the operation of a disconnect switch in GIS. The results presented show that the breakdown voltages under the VFTO remain higher than the corresponding values obtained under standard lightning impulse voltages. However, the voltage-time characteristics for the VFTO fall below the lightning impulse V-t characteristics especially at the higher gas pressure. The effect of corona discharge on the breakdown characteristics for VFTO superimposed upon dc voltage is also reported.
