Abstract

Below moisture contents of 16% for the navy beans and 15-16% for the pinto beansbreakage increased dramatically. With both the navy and pinto beans there was an increase inbreakage with a decrease in temperature, and the increase in breakage occurred at even normalhandling temperatures. The percentage of breakage in both pinto and navy beans increased as dropheight increased. The amount of damage was linearly related to the drop height. Navy beans hadmore breakage than pinto beans. The amount of damaged beans was less for beans on beans than onconcrete, but the amount of damage was still large. Pinto beans up to 25% moisture were dried toabout 15% moisture using an airflow rate of about 1.5 m3/min-m3 (1.9 cfm/bu.), while maintainingbean quality.
