Abstract
1. Diethylene glycol gives a small amount of ethylene glycol on heating with alkali. The process is appreciably intensified in the presence of acetylene. 2. A scheme is suggested showing the accelerating effect of acetylene on the breakage of the ether linkage, based on the supposition that the ether oxygen atom is able to interact with acetylene as a nucleophile.
