Abstract

Human activities can impact and modify coastal and marine environments in many different ways. Monitoring coastal environments based on macroalgae assemblages has been used as an efficient tool to evaluate environmental mitigation projects. The Ecological Evaluation Index (EEI-c) was developed in Greece to estimate the ecological status classes of coastal environments. We tested this index using Brazilian macroalgae data extracted from bibliographic surveys and concluded that the index represented an efficient tool for the rapid assessment of the ecological status classes of macroalgae assemblages and can be useful in monitoring programs.
