Abstract

Subject The outlook for the Brazilian Left. Significance The impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff in August 2016, the protracted and profound economic recession which many Brazilians attribute to her policies, and a long series of corruption accusations, indictments and jail sentences against many of its most senior members have left the Workers’ Party (PT) in tatters. Yet after more than 13 years of PT governments, other left-leaning parties have been unable to pick up the slack, raising questions about the future of ‘progressive’ politics in Brazil. Impacts An inability to form broad alliances will further undermine the electoral prospects of the Left. A conservative government is likely to emerge from the 2018 elections. A populist ‘adventurous’ candidate without a clear programme could also attract a disgruntled electorate.
