Christmas day 1642, at dawn. 1 A grey limestone manor house inWoolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, where a woman is in labour. Within hours, she delivers a boy.He was so little that they could put him into a quart pot, and he was so weak that they wrapped a bolster around his neck to keep his head on his shoulders. The midwives lost all hope: for a week the baby’s life hung in the balance. But he made it. On January 1, 1643, the child was baptized. They called him Isaac, after his late father.
