Abstract

The far-reaching goal of the article is to create a specific comparative study (or actually something more than a study, kind of a field, a structure) of a novel by Leon Kruczkowski, Kordian i cham, and a play by Jan Bratkowski from 1972 (the same title) based on the novel plots adapted by Stanisław Stampf’l. From this perspective, Bratkowski’s Kordian i cham seems to be a mirror that unfaithfully reflects the matter (and the measure) of the literary original. What that intiguing infidelity reveals are theatrical criticism and literary criticism, invoked in a weave: parallel and competitively, in the mode of a comparative juxtaposition and analysis of sources of double provenance: in this case, theatrical and literary studies (where close reading is de facto doubled close reading). Bratkowski shades and softens the meanings of the original Kordian i cham, which, in the course of successive adaptations and teatralisations, have just come under various interpretative meliorations. Here, as a result, we get the performance that is a kind of a theatrical classic today, in spite of the fact that it happens to be an attempt to tame the revisionary-revolutionary (not to say – subversive) character of the whole Kruczkowski’s novel.
