Abstract

AbstractFrancis Leyland, brother of Branwell Bronte's closefriend, Joseph, vigorously defended Branwell's reputation from those who took their cue from Mrs Gaskell's hostile portrayal and Charlotte Bronte's private correspondence. Two documents are reproduced giving the views of Francis Leyland. One is a criticism of Mary Robinson's book Emily Bronte published in The Athenaeum, the second is a manuscript account by a Miss Hurst of a visit made to Leyland late in his life.
