Abstract

A 25 year old pregnant lady had come to us with the complaint of sudden onset of bilateral total deafness. Repeated pure tone audiometry showed no response to both air conduction and bone conduction but tympanometry revealed normal tympanogram and presence of acoustic reflex in both ears which led us to suspect hysterical deafness. BSERA was done which confirmed the near normal threshold of hearing. Stress in the form of having a third consecutive female kid was the cause of the present hysterical deafness.
