Abstract

The idea of cell “rests” in the brain as origins for brain tumor formation dates back to the time of Bailey and Cushing. Recent advances in stem cell biology and the identification of neural stem cells lead to the search for brain cancer stem cells. The putative brain cancer stem cells and neural stem cells employ the same developmental queues, self-renewal and survival pathways. This Chapter highlights the similarities between neural and brain tumor stem cells and discusses the biological and clinical implication of stem cells in brain tumor development.
