Abstract

A mathematical formula, has been derived for tolerance of the brain and optic nerves to irradiation. It is expressed in terms of brain tolerance units (btu) where Tissue Dose (rad) a btu × N 0.45 × T 0.03. It appears to more realistically reflect brain tolerance than Ellis' NSD formula. A dose-tolerance curve has been proposed to analyze relative risk of brain injury for different dose schedules. Dose schedules with a btu value of less than 1050 appear to have very low risk of complication uniess exacerbating factors such as chemotherapy capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier or CNS infection are also present. The btu formula may be able to better evaluate risk-benefit comparisons of different dose schedules in treating various tumors in the brain, sellar region and extracranial sites.
