Reviled by many due to its inhumane image, enhanced by gripping albeit fictionalized images in the popular 1975 movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, it is to date the most effective antidepressant treatment available, but is also effective for other disorders such as schizophrenia and catatonia. The introduction of general anesthesia, technical enhancements, and positive outcome have contributed to a better experience for patients as well as acceptance in the field.
