Abstract
Abnormalities of left ventricular (LV) diastolic function may play a major role in patients with signs and symptoms of congestive heart failure (CHF). Although Doppler echocardiography has been used to examine LV diastolic filling dynamics, the limitations of this technique suggest the need for other objective measures of LV diastolic function. Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) plasma level is elevated in patients with isolated diastolic heart failure. BNP plasma levels may also reflect diastolic dysfunction.
