Abstract

In fibre-optical transmission systems, operation in the wavelength-division multiplex (WDM) mode allows superior utilization of the transmission capacity of optical fibres. Existing implementations are usually based on hybrid wavelength-selective components /1/. Future optical fibre communication systems require WDM devices which are compatible with the technologies of integrated optics. Devices based on the InGaAsP/InP material system offer the possibility of further monolithic integration with lasers and photodetectors operating in the wavelength range between 1 μm and 1.6 μm /2-4/. This work deals with the fabrication of Bragg gratings on different types of InGaAsP/InP waveguides and with the experimental investigation of their suitability as narrow band optical filters for wavelength division multiplexing systems with small (<10nm) channel spacing.
