Abstract
An abstract bracket formulation of dissipative time evolution equations arising in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics is introduced. Properties of solutions of the time evolution equations that allow the bracket formulation are interpreted as a mathematical formulation of the compatibility of the time evolution equations with equilibrium thermodynamics.
