Abstract
The topic of bowel cleansing with mechanical bowel preparation or oral antibiotics before elective colorectal surgery is highly contentious. Historically, a combination of mechanical bowel preparation and oral antibiotics has been used since the publication of a randomised controlled trial by Rosenberg and colleagues1 in 1971 that showed a significant reduction in rates of surgical-site infection, anastomotic leak, and overall postoperative sepsis in patients having large bowel resection. However, the use of preoperative oral antibiotics is no longer as well favoured.
