Abstract

When n parallel dislocations pile up against a straight barrier under the action of an applied stress sigma (resolved shear stress) the force per unit length on the obstacle is F/sub o/=nsigmab. The argument about the force F/sub o/ relies on the assumption of straight dislocations but breaks down when a bulge is formed in the obstacle and the question arises what is the force on the leading dislocation in this case. As an example the authors consider two dislocations parallel to the y axis in an isotropic medium. The Burgers vector of magnitude b may, in the autors' notation, have an edge component b/sub x/ and screw component b/sub y/. In order to express the stresses due to the different components of the Burgers vector b/sub k/ (with k=x,y) they define stress factors B/sub k/.
