Bovine virus diarrhoea (mucosal disease): case report and virus isolation.

Abstract

Abstract Extract The disease known as “Bovine Virus Diarrhoea” (BVD) is a specific viral disease of cattle, most commonly found in the 6- to 24-month-old age group, though all ages may be affected. It is characterized clinically by fever and diarrhoea, and pathologically by multiple superficial erosions of the anterior nares, muzzle, mouth, tongue, pharynx, oesophagus, forestomachs, abomasums and small intestine. Although the enteric manifestations of the disease are the most important, there may be clinical evidence of mild upper respiratory disease. A transient neutropenia sometimes occurs, and pregnant cows may abort. Morbidity may be high but mortality is usually, though not always, low.
