Abstract

A technique for determining the upper bounds on the performance of RS coded hybrid DS-SFH SSMA (spread spectrum multiple access) systems with noncoherent DPSK and binary FSK modulation over indoor Rician or Rayleigh multipath fading channels has been developed. An RS decoding algorithm using the channel side information about the presence or absence of multipath interference and multiple access interference is also investigated. Through performance comparisons between various SSMA systems, it can be obtained that systems with dominant DS component outperform those with dominant FH component for the constant spreading factor. RS coded hybrid SSMA system gives a significant improvement in the average symbol error probability when compared to uncoded one. A lower coding rate perform better than higher rate. Given a fixed coding rate, RS code with large signaling alphabets is a better choice. RS decoding algorithm using side information or fixed threshold offers significant system performance improvement over the usual RS decoding algorithm without using side information. >
