Abstract
A functional approach to the statistical mechanics of the classic sine-Gordon field on a finite support is presented. The band spectrum determined by the periodic boundary conditions is discussed and the partition function is coherently calculated. The kink contr̀ibution to the free energy is derived and the “dilute gas approximation” is shown to be recovered in the infinite length limit.
