Abstract

ABSTRACT The problem of change of radius of a dynamical system which suffers mass loss is addressed in the impulsive approximation. The results are framed into the general scenario of star-cluster formation. It is shown that the expansion factor Rcl/R0 is not only a function of star formation efficiency ∊, as in Hills (1980), but also of initial gas turbulence. A system can undergo collapse after sudden gas removal, and star-formation efficiencies smaller than 50% may produce bound systems. It is also shown how some recent findings in the theory of globular cluster formation, and some numerical calculations, strongly suggest the idea that the present generalization is an appropriate means of avoiding inconsistencies or nonphysical situations.
