Abstract

Solerod, H. 1970. Methods of Specifying Settlement Patterns. Norsk geogr. Tidsskr. 24, 161-180. This paper presents a study on the settlement pattern in a small area, some 100 kilometers south of Oslo. The changes during the 1945-1966 period are analysed. The patterns of the total number of dwelling houses, of the farming settlement, and the non-farming settlement are analysed separately. The cell counting technique is used. Methods applied compare observed frequency distributions based on cell counting, theoretical probability distributions, namely the Poisson distribution, Thomas' Double Poisson distribution, and the Negative Binomial distribution. Some measures of concentration tendencies are given by use of information from the observed frequency distributions and the k-parameter in the Negative Binomial distribution.
