Abstract

Boron has many applications in various industries. Solvent extraction is one of the ways to extract boron from its sources. The purpose of this study is to find the effect of using 1-octanol as extractant to boron extraction from bittern. Bittern used in this work was obtained from evaporating brine water from previous work. In this work, the author conducted boron extraction using 1-octanol as extractant and aquadest for the stripping process. Kerosene was used as diluent for 1- octanol. The effect of pH, aqueous and organic volume ratio, and 1-octanol volume percentage to extraction efficiency changes were investigated. The effect of aqueous and organic volume ratio to stripping efficiency was also investigated. Extraction efficiency was increased with increasing 1-octanol volume percentage and aqueous and organic volume ratio but decreased with increasing pH solution. The stripping process using aquadest as stripping agent was also conducted and stripping efficiency of 83 % was reached at aqueous and organic volume ratio of 1.
