Abstract

A technical report summarizes and discusses evidence concerning the role of boron in major trace element metabolism and its possible importance in osteoporosis. Attention is given to: the chemical nature and binding of boron; its history in biology; the findings of animal studies from 1981-86; and the results of recent studies on postmenopausal women and their significance in the prevention of calcium and bone loss. Food sources and nutritional requirements for boron also are discussed.(wz)
