Abstract

This poem considers popular notions of life-after-death and the experience of passing on, comparing myths of the speaker’s childhood faith with the speaker’s personal vision. Partially ekphrastic, the poem takes its impetus from a painting by Dutch painter Gerrit Dou which depicts a 17th century dental procedure.
