Abstract
1. Gas boriding in boron chloride is not very promising for mass production due to technological difficulties. 2. Boriding is most promising in a hydrogen atmosphere with application of thin coatings (0.1–0.5 mm) of amorphous boron. The process is characterized by: a) technological simplicity of all operations; b) a high utilization coefficient of boron and low expenditure of hydrogen; c) the possibility of local boriding; d) the absence of waste products contaminating the environment; e) formation of single-phase (Fe2B) diffusion coatings, which is of particular importance for hardening parts subject to dynamic and impact loads in operation.
