Abstract

β-Keto acids have been observed to react reversibly in a one to one stoichiometry with boric acid yielding complexes which exhibit intense absorption in the ultraviolet. The effects of pH and temperature on the extent of this reaction have been investigated, and a reaction mechanism has been proposed. The reaction described has been utilized to provide a sensitive and convenient spectrophotometric assay of acetoacetic decarboxylase from Clostridium acetobutylicum. It would appear to be generally applicable to β-keto acid decarboxylases.
