Abstract

The origins of rèsearch into the transmission of electromagnetic waves in the ground dates back to the early days of the Study of radioelectricity. It was not until the 1950s, however, that research really began to accelerate. The first subsurface radar results were obtained in 1956 (Cook 1960) in snow and ice and the first satisfactory use of the borehole radar technique was in salt domes (W.T. Hoster et al. 1972) using a prior patent (Friedriksen et al. 1969).
