Abstract

Performances of 'ethnic dance' by white artists became popular in the early twentieth century. The work of American-Australian Beth Dean is described briefly but the focus is on Margaret Walker and her professional folk character ensemble, Dance Concert. Walker successfully engaged in cross-cultural discourse with both professional overseas teachers and amateur pedagogues and ensembles within Australia. Walker's extensive program of community dance is arguably unparalleled in Australia and her collaboration with Dutch teacher Andre van de Plas popularised recreational folk dance. Through Dean and Walker, the contrast between crossing boundaries and traversing borders is exemplified.
