Abstract

Summary A new species of the genus Borago (B. morisiana) from the Island of S. Pietro off south-west Sardinia is described. It is similar to Borago pygmaea with which it was previously presumed to be conspecific but from which it differs in morphological, karyological and ecological characteristics. Investigations under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) allowed evaluation of the stereostructural and ultrastructural features of the pollen grains, seed coat and leaf surface. The plant is probably a palaeogenic species which, within the Anchuseae and particularly the genus Borago, has conserved certain plesiomorphic character states. A proposal is submitted for protecting this extremely rare species in danger of extinction.
