experience, it might indeed be this kind of interdependence with existing programs and the emphasis on resources available on a particular campus. Other German departments may not be able to add more than an area studies option because resources for a business orientation or coop program may not be available outside the departments. However, the new awareness of the practical value of language skills can be created just as easily on a campus oriented toward the arts, particularly music. An increasing number of students from our Conservatory of Music went to work on special projects in their own field for which they need competency in German. We are convinced that with some flexibility on the part of the German faculty there could be a growing demand for more language for professional use by a greater number of students from many other fields.
