Abstract
Book selection is as important as it is probably the most interesting part of the work of a librarian. The printed aids used are the general book selection guides; the special book selection guides; and articles and reviews in literary and other book reviewing journals. Printed guides in book form can usually be divided into two classes, namely, the select and the comprehensive. The former is of most use to the book selector, especially if it is graded and annotated. A method recommended is to send the lists to second-hand booksellers before ordering any new books. In this way it is possible to get reports from places far apart, a more satisfactory and less time-wasting practice than to rely solely upon personal search through booksellers’ catalogues or visits to shops. Personal enquiries made of the staff should always be noted on paper, otherwise they might be forgotten.
