Abstract

THIS book was written to supplement a short course in organic chemistry given at the University of Wisconsin, and in consequence does not appear to be complete in itself or to agree with the inclusion of ‘Elementary’ in its title. The beginner would be bewildered by the number of compounds dealt-with in rapid succession in the first chapter of some 32 pages, and in the subsequent chapters the usual procedure is to consider a homologous series in a very general manner with only the briefest reference to the most important members of the series, or in some cases to omit them cornpletely. Thus in the chapter on aldehydes and ketones, acetone is not even mentioned. Elementary Organic Chemistry. By Homer Adkins S. M. McElvain. (International Chemical Series). Pp. xi + 183.
