Essays on science: felicitation volume in honour of Dr Joseph Needham . Edited by Hakim Mohammed Said. Karachi: Hamdard Foundation Pakistan, 1990. Pp. xiii + 267. Pak.Rs. 400.00, $40.00, £20.00 Joseph Needham’s Science and civilisation in China , begun as a labour of love over 50 years ago, is now widely recognized as epoch-making. For one thing, the work has broken novel ground by analysing the diffusion of discoveries and inventions from China (and elsewhere from the East) to Europe, and their impact on Europe, from about the 15th to the 18th centuries. It is therefore fitting that the recently established Asian educational, scientific and cultural organization, the Hamdard Foundation Pakistan, is behind the publication under review.
