Abstract

M. Christine King, E.W.R. Steacie and science in Canada . Toronto: Toronto University Press, 1989. Pp. xii + 243, $35.00, £24.00. ISBN 0-8020-2667-2. This book is, first, the history of a struggle involving the management of science financed by government, and the problems caused by what its author has called the ‘totally unrealistic and fallacious distinction between pure and applied research’. Secondly, it is the story of how one man, E.W.R. Steacie, a successful research chemist, became, reluctantly at first but with ever-increasing commitment, the distinguished manager of a rapidly growing research institution, Canada’s National Research Council (NRC). Thirdly the book embodies a private tragedy. The author, Christine King, a chemist and historian of science, agreed to undertake Steacie’s biography at the request of the National Research Council. The manuscript was complete and accepted for publication when Dr King died in an automobile accident at the age of 40.
