Abstract The posthumous appearance of a revised edition of a classic treatise by one of the greatest personalities in the field of the medical sciences is an event of the utmost importance. In this instance the book represents the final appraisal by a vast and incisive intellect of a subject which was in its infancy when Landsteiner began his scientific career—a subject which developed upon an ever firmer basis as a result of Landsteiner's own studies and leadership, and which is surveyed in this revised edition with the authority and dignity uniquely bestowed by such lifelong association. The book follows the chapter headings of the first edition, with an added section on antigen-antibody reactions and another by Pauling on molecular structure and intermolecular forces. The great expansion of immunochemical knowledge in the nine years since publication of the first English edition is reflected in the greatly extended treatment given each chapter.
