Abstract

Measurement of computer system performance usually occupies at most a chapter or two of performance evaluation texts, but here it is given the book-length treatment it deserves. The author begins the book with an introductory chapter discussing the purposes and goals of performance measurement, which of course varyn from one study to another. He then surveys the kinds of measurement tools available, and sets out his philosophy of measurement methodology (which includes references to Aristotle and the Renaissance world view), which is expanded in a later chapter.
