Abstract

This is a widely varying collection of essays, both in subject matter and in quality. The topics range from the religious dimension of the Anti-Corn Law League to the relationship between the Derby government and the Admiralty in 1852 to British missionaries in Mongolia. All but two of the essays—those on cinema managers in the inter-war years and the impact of the National Health Service on Lancashire—are concerned with the nineteenth century.
