Abstract

A full-day professional-development seminar was held on May 14, 1990, at the Sixty East Club in Manhattan. It was conducted by Bella Hass Weinberg, an experienced indexer and an associate professor in the Division of Library and Information Science at St. John's University, which sponsored the event. Some fifty-eight people from a variety of backgrounds attended, including librarians, information scientists, writers, editors, full-time and parttime indexers, and those considering free-lance work. There was, therefore, a mix of people with indexing experience and those who had never tried to index anything. The content of the day's work was organized into four parts: (1) principles of indexing, (2) crossreference structure, (3) format of indexes, and (4) techniques of indexing. Approximately equal time was devoted to each section.
