Abstract

A right chest wall mass was incidentally detected by chest x-ray during routine medical examination in a 38-year-old asymptomatic female patient. Biopsy showed that this mass was a metastatic lesion, while the origin of this malignancy was uncertain. Extensive examinations indicated that the malignancy is from the thyroid. Unexpectedly, pathology results from total thyroidectomy did not reveal any cancer cells. Nonetheless, an iodine-131 scan post-thyroidectomy showed intense activity in the right chest wall mass, and pathology from the second biopsy of the mass confirmed thyroid cancer.
