Abstract
It is important that the results of bone and joint damage caused by a hyperbaric environment are accurately defined. Multiple terminology has been applied — avascular, aseptic or ischaemic necrosis, arthritis deformans, as well as the original 19th Century name of Caisson Disease. However, the most descriptive term applied by Beckman and Elliott in 1974 is that of dysbaric osteonecrosis. This defines the condition succinctly as resulting from a hyperbaric environment and separates it from histologically and radiologically similar appearances resulting from chronic illnesses.KeywordsBone LesionDecompression SicknessBone NecrosisAseptic NecrosisDead BoneThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
