Abstract

A three-dimensional finite difference solution for determining the bonding residual stresses is presented. Symmetric cross-ply rectangular laminates and an isotropic interlayer as the bonding material are used. The residual stresses based on typical material properties are given. Finite element results are also provided for comparison. Good agreement between FD and FEM estimates is noticed. High interlaminar normal and shear stresses are obtained for the laminates. Some of these stresses may be lowered by changing the stacking sequence of the laminates.
