Abstract

YSZ/(Ni, Al) composite coatings were deposited on superalloy Inconel 600 by the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique, followed by vacuum sintering method. In comparison with the bond strength of 3·5 N for YSZ coating, the bond strength for YSZ/(Ni, Al) composite coating increased to 4·4 N. YSZ/(Ni, Al) composite coatings exhibited a self crack healing ability by high temperature oxidation. Crack healing is promoted by the increase in the oxidation time exposure at 1100°C. YSZ/(Ni, Al) composite coatings show superior oxidation resistance than that of YSZ coating. Such composite coatings have potential in being used as thermal barrier coatings on superalloy substrates.
