Abstract

The alkaline and neutral methanolysis of methyl p-nitrophenyl sulphate proceeds solely by alkyl–oxygen scission, to yield p-nitrophenyl sulphate, while in acidic media a new catalytic pathway becomes significant, yielding p-nitrophenol by sulphur–oxygen scission.
