Abstract

This chapter examines how Bonaventure opens his treatment of sacraments in book 4 of his Commentary on Sentences . It demonstrates that, according to Bonaventure's position, did not, in any strict or narrow sense, institute all seven sacraments of New Law. The chapter presents his broad vision of why there are sacraments in first place. It addresses more specifically institution of each of seven sacraments in particular. The chapter explores Bonaventure's move from passion of Christ as source for sacraments in Commentary on Sentences to his later developed understanding in Breviloquium that the incarnate Word is fountain of every sacramental grace. The Holy Spirit was given after had been glorified and ascended into heaven. At Pentecost, apostles were confirmed directly and without ministry and sacrament.
