Abstract

AbstractThe volume and complexity of research conducted today makes it difficult for the current system of human research protection oversight to monitor studies effectively. This situation, and the lack of a cohesive quality improvement system, has contributed to deficiencies in needed protections. Private voluntary accreditation has delivered notable improvements in other sectors of health care, and the research community would do well to embrace accreditation as a way to bolster the safety net for human research participants.
