Abstract

The heat transfer characteristics of a surface covered with fine pin-fins were measured in saturated liquid helium at atmospheric pressure. The test pieces were fabricated by soldering copper filaments 60 μm in diameter and 1–1.8 mm in height perpendicularly to a copper plate so as to vary the coverage between 5 and 17%. The experimental results, which indicate excellent heat transfer characteristics, are similar to those for a frost-coated surface, known to be one of the best boiling surfaces.
