Abstract

Boethius of Dacia was a member of the ‘Modistae,’ a group of thinkers from the Middle Ages who developed the notion of ‘speculative grammar.’ He wrote on the nature and origin of grammar and parts of speech. In his writings, philosophy and grammar were interdependent, each necessary for understanding the other. Although he may have been a member of the Dominican Order, his writings were condemned by the bishop of Paris in 1270, along with the works of his fellow Averroist thinkers.
