Abstract

ABSTRACTDespite its centrality to organizing life sciences and identity politics, the body tends to disappear even when it is under scholarly consideration. The disappearing act of the body is supported by theoretical and methodological approaches that implicitly or explicitly see the body as an object that is acted upon and/or is the medium through which other concepts operate. A methodological approach that begins with bodywork allows us to understand the body not only as a site of action but also constitutive of the possibilities and limits of interacting with fields of power and ideology. Beginning with a consideration of the phenomenon of identity passing, the ethnography produced by bodies in action becomes apparent both to scholars and to those engaged in identity production and reaction.
