Abstract

Body modification is an umbrella term for a vast range of techniques which consciously aim to change or redesign the body. Body modifications may be temporary or permanent, normative or oppositional, mainstream or non‐mainstream. While many body modification practices do not have any direct link to sexuality, others have been strongly sexualized in common perception. Others again are chosen or engaged in for sexuality‐related reasons. Assumptions on race, class, gender, sexuality, and cultural difference shape discourses on body modification. Sexual and gender dissidents have been significant contributors to contemporary body modification cultures in Europe and North America.
